Club Philly Forensics, an after-school and monthly Saturday forensics program for youth ages 12-18 will launch on Saturday, September 23, 2017; the week of National Forensic Science Week in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, PA. Club Philly Forensics will give students a better understanding of the forensics field through hands-on activities and discussions with forensic professionals; the founder is a forensic scientist. For the past seven years, its founding organization, the Association of Women in Forensic Science, Inc. (AWIFS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has provided mentoring, networking and participated in collaborative events in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Students who register for Club Philly Forensics will learn about scientific analysis of physical evidence in Forensic Drug Chemistry and Forensic DNA Analysis; other popular forensic fields will include Crime Scene Investigation and Firearms Examination. Many forensic scientists work in laboratories and students need to comprehend the training and educational background needed to be hired at a crime lab. Exposing students to an aspect of forensics not seen on television will give them opportunities to meet actual forensic science professionals and become more aware of crime.
